The Journey: Rebuilding & Manual Swapping My Nissan 350Z

Rebuilding & Manual Swapping My 350Z

In June 2023, I crashed my 2006 black 350Z (automatic)—a car that I had spent money, time and sweat on, after countless mods and upgrades. Instead of letting go and sending it to a junkyard, I decided to keep it and bring it back in a new shell—but this time, it would be manual swapped. Here’s my journey so far.

The Crash & Aftermath

I had spent a ton of time and money upgrading my Z, including:
‣ Coilovers
‣ Drilled & slotted brakes w/ carbon pads
‣ Full front suspension replacement
‣ New power steering rack & pinion
‣ Nvidia Exhaust
‣ Subwoofer system
‣ Wheels & Tires (DSW06)

But then, the crash happened.

After the wreck, the car sat for months while I figured out what to do next. I didn’t want to start over completely.

Finding the Right Shell

My thought process was to find a shell, with a good body and originally a manual. It didn’t matter if the engine was blown, or even if it didn’t have one. All I was looking for was a car that I could move everything over. After months of looking for one on Facebook Marketplace, I came accross this.

The perfect candidate had been posted:

‣ No engine
‣ No transmission
‣ No driveshaft
‣ But… a clean body, without any crash damage! The car only had 112k miles.

This was exactly what I needed.

Pulling the Engine from the Old 350Z

Once I had the new shell, the next step was removing the engine from my wrecked 350Z.

Now, the engine is on a engine stand, and I gotta do some maintenance before swapping it into the new car.

Maintenance Before the Swap:

‣ New timing chain & guides
‣ New rear main seal
‣ New thermostat
‣ All new coolant/heater core hoses

Sourcing the Transmission & Driveshaft

With the engine prepped, I needed a transmission and driveshaft to complete the swap.

‣ Found a CD001 manual transmission
‣ Bought a used flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate (I KNOW I KNOW, im upgrading it later.)
‣ Tracked down a driveshaft in a junkyard

What’s Next?

Now, all that’s left is:
‣ Installing the engine & transmission
‣ Transferring all my mods from the old car
‣ Fine-tuning everything before the first drive
